Center for Southeastern Tropical Advance Remote Sensing (CSTARS)

Centers and Specialty Labs

Specialized centers and labs foster relationships and combine resources to advance the knowledge of marine and atmospheric science.

These include:

  • The Aircraft Center for Earth Studies(ACES) focuses on science-driven sensing and technology development to help better understand our changing planet. ACES runs scientific field campaigns around the world, often in extreme environments that serve as analogs for planetary science and ocean worlds applications.

  • The Center for Aerosol Science and Technology (CAST) is a group of faculty, students, and researchers at the University of Miami focused on the characterization of fundamental aerosol formation and transformation processes to determine the impact on the Environment, Climate, Health, and to utilize these processes to develop new materials to enable Energy, Environment, and Medical technologies.

  • The Center for Southeastern Tropical Advance Remote Sensing (CSTARS) has expanded access to real-time, high-resolution satelite imagery. Covering all of Florida, the eastern U.S., all of the Caribbean Basin and a significant portion of South America and the eastern Pacific, CSTARS has assisted with Hurricane Katrina assessment, earthquake efforts in Haiti, and in the monitoring of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

  • The CSL – Center for Carbonate Research conducts integrated research in sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry, and geophysics in modern and ancient carbonates to advance knowledge in a variety of emerging topics in carbonates.

  • The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) brings together the resources of partner universities with those of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). These institutions tackle research projects, share information and encourage public outreach programs, including student internships.

  • The Glassell Family Center for Marine Biomedicine is dedicated to integrating the Rosenstiel School’s world-class expertise with the cutting-edge human health research being done across the University of Miami Together, we will develop innovative and pioneering solutions to benefit human health and conquer disease.

  • The Robert K. Johnson Center for Marine Conservation is a new hub for interdisciplinary and solutions-oriented marine conservation research, education, and outreach at the Rosenstiel School.
