RSMAS is ideally situated for the study of hurricanes through its location on Virginia Key in Miami. The hurricane research groups at RSMAS benefit from close collaborations with neighboring facilities including Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) , Hurricane Research Division (HRD) , and National Hurricane Center (NHC) , as well as more remote facilities such as Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) , , Naval Research Lab - Monterey (NRL-MRY) , Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere (CIRA) , and Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) .
